Valmont Bog Sanctuary

The 59-acre Valmont Bog Sanctuary and uplands are located in West Hazleton Borough and Hazle Township. The area adjoins a wetland containing a large variety of native orchids, carnivorous plants, mosses, and even cranberries. Due to the sensitive nature of the habitat, the Valmont Bog Sanctuary is open to scientific research only.

Valmont Bog Sanctuary History:

North Branch Land Trust took ownership of the Valmont Bog sanctuary in 2011. We worked closely with the owner CAN DO, Inc. along with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PPL Corporation, Native Orchid Society, and other stakeholders to make the project a reality.

In recent years, numerous organizations have studied the unique ecology of the Sanctuary including Longwood Gardens, the Native Orchid Society, the Smithsonian Institue, and more.
