Developed by the American Forest Foundation and The Nature Conservancy, the Family Forest Carbon Program enables family forest owners to access carbon markets, empowering them to help address climate change while earning income from their land.

The program partners with family and individual landowners to manage their forests in ways that improve forest health and increase carbon sequestration and storage, while balancing other important benefits from our forests. We then sell the sequestered carbon as verified carbon credits to companies who are working to confront climate change and achieve vital social, economic, and environmental outcomes.

Meet the Presenters:

Brittney Hartzell is an Outreach Forester for the Family Forest Carbon Program. Her role is to determine forest eligibility for enrollment in FFCP as well as provide guidance to landowners for sustainable forest management. Brittney is a Pennsylvania native and currently resides in the small village of Mifflinville, PA alongside the Susquehanna River. She holds a B.S. Environmental Science from Bloomsburg University, and is currently working on a M.S. Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences from University of Illinois. Brittney enjoys working with PA’s family forest owners to help them achieve their goals while enhancing the health of their forest and supporting a natural climate solution. When not exploring forests she likes to spend her free time bass fishing, kayaking, reading, and spending time with her husband and three dogs.

Sara Velazquez has been an account manager with the Family Forest Carbon program since June of 2022.

Before FFCP she was the education and development associate for a small land trust based in Northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Sara lives in North Eastern Pennsylvania in a very small town called Milanville. She enjoys working with landowners and loves hearing about their woodlands and how passionate landowners are about caring for their properties. When not working directly with landowners, Sara enjoys hiking, gardening, cooking, kayaking, and spending time with her husband and three dogs.

Jonathan Shears serves as Partnerships Manager for the Family Forest Carbon Program, where he focuses on ways carbon sequestration can complement the work of other forestry and conservation organizations. In his three years with the American Forest Foundation, Jonathan has worked on a variety of programs, including the American Tree Farm System. Before AFF, Jonathan worked as an Environmental Educator serving the inner city students of Washington, D.C. Jonathan also enjoys hiking and kayaking but only has one dog.
